Saving and Improving Lives – Clinical Research in our NHS

11:45 – 13:00

In Scotland, world-leading research is led, supported, and delivered across NHS Scotland and universities. Over 30,000 patients take part in research each year, even more during the (COVID-19) pandemic. It’s been a crucial part of the pandemic response - advancing scientific understanding and researching new ways to understand and treat the disease. Thanks to all those involved, NHS Research Scotland has identified treatments, improved care, helped develop vaccines and ultimately saved lives.

Whilst the pandemic has been unprecedented, it provides important lessons for the future of research. High quality clinical research leads to better health outcomes for everyone - restoring Scotland’s diverse portfolio of research across all research phases, treatment types and conditions is vital.

This session will explore the work of NHS Research Scotland – a partnership of Scottish NHS Boards and the Chief Scientist Office (CSO) of Scottish Government.  The session will also gain insight into work which is underway to deliver a bold and ambitious vision for the future of clinical research delivery across the UK, which focuses on:

  • Clinical research embedded in the NHS;
  • Patient-centred research;
  • Streamlined, efficient and innovative research;
  • Research enabled by data and digital tools; and
  • A sustainable and supported research workforce.

By working together, the aim is to create a resilient and future-proofed research environment, which is focused on tackling the most pressing healthcare burdens -  ensuring everyone can benefit from advances in cutting-edge healthcare.
