Chief Nursing Officer, Scottish Government

Professor Alex McMahon is Chief Nursing Officer for Scotland and Director of the CNO Directorate in Scottish Government. He took up post on the January 2022.

Previously he was Executive Director for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Healthcare Professionals in NHS Lothian.

Alex has professional responsibility for two thirds of the NHS Scotland workforce; nursing, midwifery, AHPs and healthcare scientists.

Alex leads on a number of policy areas such as infection prevention control. He has worked across NHS, private sector, government and the RCN in previous posts. He holds two honorary professorships with the University of Stirling and Queen Margaret University.
