Specialty Doctor – Medicine for the Elderly, NHS Tayside

Dr Helen Elder is a Specialty Doctor and Clinical Lead for Medicine for the Elderly (MFE), in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. Dr Elder started her career as a General Practitioner before returning to hospital medicine as a Specialty Doctor in Acute Medicine. During six years in Acute Medicine, working as an independent practitioner,  Dr Elder developed a special interest in geriatric medicine, working in MFE and orthogeriatrics alongside Acute Medicine.

In 2014, Dr Elder transferred into Medicine for the Elderly where she has gained experience in acute, rehabilitation and community geriatrics. She maintained her enthusiasm for Acute Medicine and the development of and Acute Frailty Team and Unit was the perfect amalgamation of both specialties. For the past two years, Dr Elder has been leading the Acute Frailty team whilst progressing her interest in service development.

She is currently involved in the restructuring of community services in Dundee in order to deliver improved urgent care in the community for frail elderly patients.
