Chief Medical Officer’s Annual Report 2023 - 2024

11:15 – 12:30

In this session, Professor Sir Gregor Smith, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Scotland, will discuss some of the key topics from his forthcoming Annual Report which will be published later this summer.

We know our health and care system in Scotland is facing significant challenges. The burden of disease in Scotland is expected to increase by 21% over the next 20 years despite an overall decline in the population, and the planetary crisis is already impacting the most vulnerable in society.

The CMO will share his thoughts and reflections on how practising Realistic Medicine can help us to overcome Scotland’s health challenges, and the practical steps that are being taken to cultivate our culture of Value Based Health and Care. We will hear about the importance of human connection in healthcare, along with the philosophy of careful and kind care, the impact of the planetary crisis on health and our route to excellence through innovation.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to experience spoken word poetry, see the impact of poverty on end-of-life care and hear from experts who will explore key messages in a panel discussion. The keynote presentation will feature Jennifer Hynes, Community Dietitian, and her work supporting people to achieve the outcomes that matter to them.
