This session, chaired by Sir Gregor Smith, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, will focus on approaches to reducing the environmental impact of clinical practice and its contribution to climate change.  Speakers attending this session include Scott Brady, Climate Programme Manager from Health Care Without Harm, Europe and Alifia Chakkera, Head of Pharmaceutical Sustainability, Scottish Government.

Clinical practice is central to reducing NHS Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions and achieving the aim of a becoming an environmentally sustainable health service. The session will consider how sustainability can be incorporated into quality improvement work and will highlight work which is underway in two areas of particular importance, respiratory medicine and surgery.

Emissions from the propellant in metered dose inhalers in Scotland and from anaesthesia are estimated at over 100,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2020/21.
